Circumcision Circumcision is a minor surgical procedure performed in the hospital or the office in the first few days of life. It involves removing the foreskin, or covering of the tip of the penis. A local anesthetic will be used to provide some relief from pain. The procedure takes about 15 minutes to perform. Risks include bleeding, infection, injury to other tissues, or failing to achieve the desired cosmetic effect or appearance. Benefits may include a decreased risk of urinary tract infections or other diseases of the penis. Whether
or not to perform a circumcision depends on family custom, religious
beliefs and personal preference.
There is no strong medical evidence that circumcision is
necessary for cleanliness or good health.
Boys who are not circumcised can be taught to care for and
clean themselves very easily.
We recommend that you talk with your doctor about the
procedure before the baby is born so that we can answer any
questions you might have. |
